At the last minute on Friday afternoon Kelly and I decided to go to one of the Bay Islands this past weekend! Around 6pm we took off on a 3 hour bus ride from San Pedro Sula to a town called La Ceiba where we stayed the night in a cheap but clean place. That night we also went to a cool restaurant called “The Expatriot Bar” where we split a really good baked potato and a piece of pecan pie… the atmosphere seemed really chill and laid back there. Then Saturday morning we got a taxi to the boat that left for Utila island around 9:30. When we got to the island it was SOOOO nice…. The whole island only had one long road and another one that was perpendicular to it. There were lots of cute little bars and restaurants and hotels. We found a room in a little hotel called Relax Inn, put our stuff down and headed off to explore. We found this really cool place called The Jade Seahorse where the owner of the place had decorated it like nothing I’ve ever seen before… he used lots of old glass bottles, marbles and mosaics in cement. We ate some tasty food and met a really nice Dutch couple about our age who we exchanged email addresses with. We also went to this really cool bar that had it’s own little pier that had a lighted hole in the middle where you could hang your feet over the edge and watch the fish swimming by. We met some nice Peace Corps volunteers there too. Then Sunday morning we sat on this really deserted private beach… it was so perfect, there was practically no one around. We had our own little grass hut to sit under with a couple of chairs. We walked out into the ocean a long ways because it was really shallow and we found a bunch of big conch shells way out on this little sand bar. The weather was just as ideal as you could ever imagine, it was such a tropical paradise… we were so relaxed by the time we left the beach. Then we caught the 2pm boat back to the mainland and right away got a bus back to San Pedro. We were really glad that we made the effort to get out there even if it was for just a weekend.
