The first day of school! But this time I’m the teacher and let me tell you I’m just as nervous as I was when I was a student, if not more so….
I’ve spent the last week preparing my classroom for the influx of 25 first graders tomorrow. This has consisted of a lot of making posters and figuring out how to secure said posters on to not-so-clean cinderblock walls. Thanks to the gifts I was given by friends (shout out to the awesome teacher supply bag from the Schmidts), advice from returning teachers, and lots of hours in the classroom, my room is ready!
Now, whether or not I’m ready is a different story…
The past few days I’ve found myself going through a wave of emotions…excitement, fear, and anxiety, to name a few. I’m so excited to meet the 25 little squirrels that I’ll get to spend the next year with. I’ve heard so much about their unique, weird little personalities and I can’t wait to see them in person and begin what I hope will become meaningful relationships with them and their families. However, I also have found myself thinking “I’m about to start teaching 1st grade and I don’t really even know how to do that…” Yes, I learned a TON the past month during training…thinking about what I knew about teaching a month ago as compared to now is pretty incredible, BUT this doesn’t mean I’m 100% prepared…but can I ever really be 100% prepared to spend 7 hours in a classroom with 6 and 7 year olds? I don’t think so….so, these next few days will be all about not only teaching my kids what and how we do things in my classroom, but about me getting my footing with the little bitty humans I have the privilege of hanging out with this next year!
