Up for a little story?
It was library day and we had all filed into the hot little room with a single, measly fan but delightfully filled floor to ceiling with books. This is a special place for it is the biggest library in the region. The students are allowed one book a week. Upon selecting, the class would form a line to check out their books. Nohemy was next in line and handed me her book: it’s a textured picture book for a small baby to play with.
“Nohemy!” I say startled at her choice. I knew she was reading chapter books now. She hesitated then smiled sheepishly but reaffirmed her choice by pushing it closer to the scanner.
I smiled, suddenly understanding. “Is this for your sister Sophie?” A broad grin crossed her face at the mention of her name and she nodded. I gestured for her to come closer to me and whispered into her ear, “Go pick out a book for your self, this one can be for Sophie this week.” She quickly pulled James and Giant Peach off the shelf. These kids astounded me with their generosity all the time.
The work I did in Cofradía, Honduras is the dearest work I may ever have the joy of doing, which is why I now reach out to you, my dear friends and family to ask that you consider joining me in this labor of love. The school runs largely on scholarships thereby offering bilingual education to many children who otherwise could not attend. A small donation goes a long way down there. If you feel called to this, sponsoring a student monthly is the most assured way to sustain a student through their education—check out how to do it easily online at becaschool.org. Like snail mail? Just slip in a check made out to BECA Schools!
Thank you for the encouragement and support you have given me all these years and thank you for listening to my story.
