Before we became teachers with BECA at Amigos de Jesus, we were both pre-med students at the University of Rochester. It was there where we were first introduced to Students Helping Honduras (SHH), a non-profit organization with a mission to build one thousand schools across Honduras. After participating in fundraisers and community service through SHH, we had the opportunity to travel to Honduras for our first service trip. Friendly people invited us into the Honduran community, and perhaps most notably, the Honduran children inspired us with their dedication to learning despite various external factors that often prohibit academic advancement.
Three years and three service trips later, we decided to spend a year before medical school working with BECA at ADJ. While medical school has always been the goal for both of us, this experience teaching children here has taught us so many invaluable lessons, including empathy, compassion, and responsibility for others even during stressful situations and with emotional fatigue. Now, we are much more confident that we can apply these values in our future endeavors.
