Miss Amelia wears many hats at Amigos de Jesus Bilingual School, including Prepa Teacher, Teacher & Student Support Coordinator/Administrator, and Resource Teacher. Follow her around for a day at school and see what teaching with BECA is like for her. Is it really already the end of September? My first month as a BECA volunteer has completely flown by and I cannot believe I’ve already spent a month serving BECA and Amigos de Jesus Bilingual School. On any given day, I try to balance between many different roles. Between BECA roles or the roles I take on living on-site at a children’s home (Amigos de Jesus), each moment of my day is a unique learning experience. Whether it’s teaching in the classroom, navigating through classroom issues with members of our team, cooking for our BECA community, or hanging out with the kids at the hogar (home), each role I assume here is valuable in its own way. Life here is fast-paced and hectic, but awe-inspiring and lovely at the same time. By the time a full day of teaching, meetings, laundry, and playing outside end, cold showers are a refreshing treat before rolling into bed and falling asleep before my head even hits the pillow.
I’m more thankful every day for this amazing place, this experience, and the incredibly hard-working community I’m surrounded by, and I cannot wait to see where the rest of the year takes me!
