While I am finally settling into a routine here at Amigos de Jesus, it is safe to say no two days are the same! Whether we have an unexpected power outage, a tarantula hiding in our bookshelf, or a rogue cow on the loose, each day brings excitement and variety! This is especially true teaching first grade, where things are as unpredictable as the weather. If there is one thing that I have learned during my time in Honduras, though, it is to embrace the chaos and just go with it.
As a first grade teacher, I spend the majority of my time either in the classroom, preparing lessons for the next day, or attending (what can seem like endless) meetings. When the school day is over, I can often be found hand washing laundry at the pila behind our house, working out (not as often as I would like), reading in the hammock, or attempting to cook something new out of broccoli and cabbage. Being at Amigos is unique, because in addition to teaching, we live on the same campus as our students and can partake in the daily events at the Hogar too. This might mean eating dinner with the kids a few nights a week, providing extra reading practice, playing soccer after school, or attending the friday night game nights.
While each day is unique in its own way, I can guarantee two things: I will go to bed completely exhausted at night and I will grow in ways that I could not have imagined.
